Transitioning from your summer to fall wardrobe can be tricky, but it all comes down to styling!

Although the calendar says October, there are definitely still days where the weather can be warmer and confusing to dress for. Freezing in the morning and weirdly warm come the afternoon, it can be difficult deciding what to wear for the day.

love fall and autumnal weather, I really do, but lately it feels like the weather here in Montreal can’t make up its mind! I just want to commit to layers! Those chunky sweaters, blazers, and different types of trousers that I’m craving right now and just can’t seem to wear comfortably all day. So I’ve had to become a bit more creative when it comes to putting together an outfit.

One of the easiest pieces to transition from summer to fall are dresses. Luckily we live in an era where florals seem to be continuously on trend through all seasons, which makes this #OOTD a perfect example of how to achieve this transitional look!

It all comes down to how you plan and style your outfit. Almost any piece from the summer can be worked into a fall wardrobe so long as you have:
  1. The Right Layers
  2. Accessories to “complete the look”
Today on Belles Reveries, I thought I would break down how I styled today’s outfit, and how this dress could be easily through all seasons (so long as you choose the right pieces to go with it).

This time last year, I dedicated an entire blog post (which you can read here) to fall dresses. For me, they're the easiest item you could have in your wardrobe. From easy lightweight dresses like this one or sweater dresses I styled in that previous post, there are plenty of options to try! I personally like wearing dresses in the fall since I can decide how much I want to layer without having to worry about being too warm if the temperature decides to change. Worn with a cute pair of boots, and you've got yourself a fool proof style combination for fall!

Outfit Details

To be honest, I bought this dress in the summer, knowing it would be the perfect item that could be worn through all seasons. To see how I styled it in the summer, you can check out the blog post it was featured in here

Now, I was first attracted to this dress because of its colour. Red has been on trend since last spring, and the obsession is going nowhere! The deep shade of red is a beautiful colour, that looks great paired with just about anything. The dress also has a tiny rose floral print that, again, is still trending from the summer. With long sheer sleeves it makes it ideal for layering without worrying about overheating.

To make this dress more “fall appropriate”, the key item was footwear. I opted for my over the knee boots from ALDO. The black suede material is essential for the cooler months, and the silver heel is this eye-catching metallic that adds a bit of an edge to the overall look. In the summer, I wore this dress with espadrille sandals, but pairing the dress with a darker shoe already sets the right tone for the fall.

I then decided to layer a denim jacket over the dress, for a more casual day time look. Again, I’m keeping the layers on the lighter side just for this confusing weather, but if it’s more of a cooler fall day, then I would definitely move to something heavier like a leather jacket or even throw an extra sweater on. A blazer could also be a great choice as those tend to be on the heavier side of layering.

Fall Makeup 101: That Dark Lip

Now it wouldn't be a completed look for the fall without a dark lip. This is quintessential fall makeup, but funny enough, this look just wouldn't feel the same if I had worn my usual nude-pink lip. Ever since I started wearing my glasses more (as I should have been for awhile...), I really like to keep my eye makeup to a minimal. So pairing a naked eye with a dark lip creates a more daytime balanced look. I love how just a dash of colour on the lips can bring a natural flush to your cheeks (even though I already had about 5 layers of blush on too). I used to be a liquid lipstick type of gal, but lately my favourite combination is pairing a lipliner with a tinted gloss. It will give the colour pay off of a liquid lip, but without the drying effect.
