I would definitely describe this look as “grandpa chic”.

If you would have given me these items to wear a few years ago, I would have laughed and asked for something that isn’t so man-ish. Oh how things have changed….

For the longest time, I would consider my personal style to be generally feminine. I love elements like ruffles and lace in my clothes, and I definitely won’t say no to a little glamour with some glitter and sparkle as well. Even when my style had reached that dark and edgy phase, there was always something feminine about my outfit.

As much as I still love all of these elements in my clothing, I’ve grown to really appreciate and want to experiment more with menswear. The menswear trend has definitely gained more momentum over the last few years. First it was those items like “the boyfriend shirt” or “boyfriend jeans” which were all meant to fit more oversized and relaxed as opposed to the usual fit. Now we’ve moved onto full suits and clothing that is not necessarily just oversized, but appears more masculine. From cut to colour palette, the “man repeller” styles of pants, shoes, and other accessories are definitely not losing traction in popularity.

If you read my last article which discussed my favourite collections from NYFW (you can read it here), you would have seen collections like Tibi which were more androgynous. The clothing was almost genderless as models would walk down the runway, some women and a few men wearing similar outfits of loose fitting trousers with a natural waistline or longer length blazers. It’s refreshing to see fashion moving away from the conformities of what women would typically wear. Let’s give up those skin tight dresses and pants, and let our bodies breathe!

Now I don’t want to give you the wrong impression. As much as I love fashion, the reality of me actually going out and buying the trends I love in magazines isn’t always the case. I’m going to admit something…. I have commitment issues when it comes to actually buying and wearing the items. Funny enough, I complain about years of wearing skinny jeans or clothes that are always so tight, but the second I go to wear something a bit more oversized or tailored differently, it feels extremely unnatural.

Any time I feel like I’m stepping out of my comfort zone, I do still get nervous about wearing those pieces out in public for the first time, but I’m happy to be pushing my limits and experimenting more with my persona style.

And with that, I bring you today’s outfit!

OUTFIT DETAILS

Where do I begin with this menswear inspired outfit. The checkered blazer and the wide leg trousers are new additions to my closet that scream fall weather.

The blazer, from H&M, is the perfect option for layering especially at this time of year since it’s made from a jersey fabric that isn’t too heavy. The checkered print is a blend of mustard, cream, and black which together create the perfect fall palette. It definitely falls under the “boyfriend” fit with the longer torso and boxier shoulders, but you can also see the menswear inspiration in something as small as the button detail. What I love most, is when the jacket is buttoned, it still gives me a shape even if it has more of a boxier and vintage fit.

Although I’ve styled it with trousers, I could wear this item with just about anything in my wardrobe. It would look equally as cool and trendy with a pair of jeans as it would with leather trousers or skirt. I consider this to be a versatile piece and I can’t wait to style it differently throughout the fall and winter.

Moving onto the trousers, if you’ve been reading my previous posts, you would recognize these trousers from my What to Buy from Zara article (you can read that here). These khaki trousers don’t just look great on the hanger, but fit like a glove. There’s no weird pulling or parts that fit too tight, which has been my experience with similar styles from other stores. I love the khaki colour for fall, it’s a staple that looks great with everything from other neutrals to colour. Again, this is going to be another versatile piece that could be worn with other trends like cowboy boots or even combat boots for an edgier look.

FINDING NEW INSPIRATION

menswear, OOTD, outfit details, street style, personal style, H&M, Zara, Fall dressing, fall style, fashion blogger, Montreal fashion blogger,

I love finding inspiration for my personal style and taking “risks” like stepping out of the skin tight box. Once I purchased these two pieces, I had at least 3 other outfit ideas for each item that would all look completely different. That’s what I love about fashion and what I love about being more creative with my style. When you find something in store and you can already picture how you would wear it not just once, but in multiple ways, you know it’s the perfect purchase.
