Rompers: A Summer Staple I Swear By

Friday, June 22, 2018

Jumpsuit, Play Suit, Romper, etc. there’s plenty of names for them, but we can all agree that they’re the best secret weapon.

No matter the season or event, a romper is the easiest option to go with. Yes okay, I will agree the bathroom situation when wearing one is a tad awkward, but I’l take some awkwardness for the simplicity of choosing to wear a romper.

Literally it’s a one step outfit. Choose the romper from your closet, and put it on. And there you have your outfit for the day! Pick a pair of shoes, a bag, and maybe even an accessory or two and you’re ready to go. Yes dresses are just as easy to wear, but then it’s considering the length of the dress, if you’re going to be moving around all day how will that affect your choice of outfit. With a romper or playsuit you don’t have to think about that. Because it’s either pants or shorts, you can move around as much as you want and still look cute while feeling comfortable.

I think it’s pretty clear where I stand when it comes to rompers, so I’ve dedicated a blog post to sharing how I style them, how simple it is to elevate them, and I’ll even share a few examples of different rompers and jumpsuits you’ll be adding to your shopping bag!

How to Style a Romper

I’m a casual girl, I don’t go out often, so when buying and wearing rompers, I style them in a way that is going to suit my everyday street style. Now to answer the question “how do you style your romper” simply, the answer is - just put it on!

That’s right, I’m very much somebody who will throw on a romper and a pair of sandals and be good for the day. Now if I’m trying to style it more as an outfit, I’ll add some other pieces to the look. Like what I’ve worn here, by adding a denim jacket, shopper bag, and some sort of sneaker or flat, you take your simple romper and create more of an outfit with it.

Tip: If you’re wearing a romper for everyday casual wear, look for one with a print in a lightweight fabric.

Lightweight fabric is the best option especially for the warmer months when you would typically were these. That way you can be comfortable all day no matter how hot it gets!

As for print, I like to have rompers and jumpsuits with a print because if you wear them alone  they’re interesting and could be a complete outfit, but you’re still able to pair them with other items like jackets or sweaters if needed.

Casual vs Night Out

So you’ve purchased a few rompers for everyday wear, but you’re thinking of buying one for a night out or for an event. Again, I think a jumpsuit is a fun option for any sort of event, because even though they have been around for years, they still seem like the unconventional option when it comes to special events.

When looking for a more formal option, you want to focus on the main design aspects:

Material - Don’t go with a lightweight fabric. Instead, there are plenty of options that are in heavier fabrics that will look more formal.

Details - Instead of a print, look for small details which elevate the overall appearance of the jumpsuit. What you would look for in a formal dress, try to find those similar details or trends like ruffles, embellishment, etc.

Accessories - This is the easiest way to elevate even the simplest of jumpsuits. Like a little black dress, a little black jumpsuit can be worn for multiple events just by changing the accessories. Colour vs Neutral tones, Heels vs sandals, the options are limitless you just need to be creative!

Here's The Tea

For anyone who feels they can't wear a romper, it all comes down to 3 things: style, size, how you wear it. Don't get me wrong, there are rompers out there that if I put on, will make me look like a toddler. Depending on the colour, print, or shape of it there are many ways for it to go wrong. I feel like there's an option out there for everyone, you just need to know yourself well enough to know how to wear it.

Tip #1: Don't size down

Especially when it is shorts, you want to make sure everything is covered and the material flows over your body as a dress would. Trust me when I say you don't want to be in hot humid weather wearing a tight cotton booty short romper.

Tip #2: Find the style which suits you

Rompers or playsuits may not be for everyone, but then try a jumpsuit. Or my number one suggestion is try the item in a colour or print that seems "safe" - for many people that's in black. That way it's not too out of your comfort zone.

Tip #3: Just own it

Don't be afraid of what people might think or listen to that voice in your head saying you can't wear it. Just go for it. Fashion is about having fun, and rompers are all fun!
