It has been a few months since I last shared a fitness related blog post.

Since majority of my content is dedicated more to fashion & beauty, I always forget about sharing the other passion in my life. Staying fit and healthy has been a lifestyle change that I will never regret. Taking time out of my day whether its 20 minutes to a few hours, I know my body feels its absolute best when I am doing something for my physical fitness and overall well being.

Now as much as I am pro-fitness and working out, I don’t think I’m alone in saying that I hate cardio. When it comes to exercise I have a list of preferences, and doing cardio is probably at the bottom of that list. Like many of you, I have a tendency to train the parts of my body that I enjoy the most.

As an athlete, as much as I want to think dance alone is enough cardio, I was always lacking in that foundation or base fitness. My heart rate was out of control, I would get tired easily, and there was a lack of balance in my current training routines.

In the last few months, I’ve slowly changed my perspective on cardio and decided that this love/hate relationship with it was going to end. I was going to find my love for cardio (as much as I didn’t want to).

Throughout this process, there are a few cardio based exercises and programs that I like to add to my current training routine. Majority of these exercises are high intensity, giving you a quick but difficult workout.

I’ve also included some of my tips throughout this post for all of you who may be doubting this whole “pro cardio” concept. There are ways to trick your body into loving it, and this post is dedicated to sharing what I have done to change how I view cardio training.

Exercise #1 : Burpees

If you’re looking for one move that will target cardio, abs, arms, and glutes… well burpees are the way to go. The motion of jumping into a plank with or without the push up repeated over and over will leave me catching my breath within 1 minute. For me, I personally love to do cardio sessions that are fast and short. Your lungs will burn instantly, but after a few rounds, in less than 10 minutes you’ve targets almost every muscle group in one compound exercise.

Because of the type of training that I need to do, this exercise is perfect to set a timer and push myself to maintain my energy for about 2 minutes a session. I’ll repeat these rounds 3-5 times to amount to a total workout of 6-10 mutes long.

My tip for you is to wakeup and get out of bed and jump right into your cardio. Personally, when I’m still half asleep my body doesn’t completely realize what I’m doing, so I’ll get through 2 rounds before my mind really starts to wake up.

Exercise #2 : Stair Runs

This is a great option if you’re looking for a challenge. Not only is this a great exercise for cardio, the incline of moving upwards and then downwards will target those lower body muscles, especially in your glutes, quads, and calves. This is another exercise I love to do when I want to push myself for a shorter amount of time. Doing shorter sets of stair runs where you push yourself and try to maintain the same energy until the end is what will increase your cardio strength while also building a stronger lower body.

Again, I’ll do short 2-4 minute sessions and then repeat them for 3-4 rounds.

Exercise #3 : HIIT Cardio Workouts

This is a completely different way of training cardio, where you do high intensity exercises for a short period of time, combining different exercises to get a full body burnout. Similar to the previous two exercises, I enjoy the concept of doing an exercise for a short period of time, and there are ways to even add core exercises or glute / leg focused exercises in between the cardio moves.

Being able to train not just my cardio, but to add strengthening exercises in between is a great way for me to get a full body workout. I’ll normally do this right in the morning once I’ve woken up. I personally like starting my day with a full body workout and stretch, as it leaves me feeling focused to jump start my day on the right foot. Also, there’s less of a chance of me giving the excuse of not having enough time to workout throughout my day if I start my day with a HIIT session.

Exercise #4 : Jogging

This is by far the one form of cardio I hate the most, but I have forced myself to love it. As much as high intensity cardio is a great way to train your heart to move faster, I also need to balance this with a type of cardio that also trains my heart to not jump start to my max heart rate right away.

Training your heart to not freak out when performing any exercise is a great foundation to then build on with faster movements. The training program I follow for dance had us start running long distance from 15 minutes to slowly building up to 1 hour. Was it easy, hell no. But with time, my body started to push further and my mental strength has grown too.

Getting over the mental game of going for a jog is probably harder than the jogging itself. I was that person who always said I couldn’t run or there’s no way I would last longer than a few minutes. Training my mind to be more positive and fight for it was a huge part in my success.

I personally enjoy going for a jog outside, especially on those nicer days, I can just plug in my ear buds to listen to music as I take in the pretty views around my neighbourhood.

Final Thoughts

I think the reason why so many of us either hate cardio or choose to not keep doing it consistently is because it is a repetitive form of exercise. My biggest tip to all of you is to get out of the box of using a treadmill and change up how you do cardio. Get outside, take in the sun, and try some of these exercises! Are they going to burn, yes! But that’s the feeling I’m learning to love.

Embrace the burn and leave me a comment about what your favourite cardio exercise is!
