Maybe it’s the bursts of sunshine or maybe I’m being too optimistic, but dare I say summer is approaching!

With the weather hitting 30 degrees this week, I can’t help myself but get excited with the possibility that here in Canada we’ve basically skipped spring and jumped right into summer!

June is right around the corner, so I figured what better post to write than one that discusses my summer uniform. I think it’s fair to say that I tend to gravitate to certain looks. Whenever I’m having an off day or I’m simply just too lazy to come up with something, there are certain looks (that no matter what), I know it’s going to work. For example, that one pair of boyfriend jeans that I know you’re probably fed up of seeing on my blog and instagram, but people I’m telling you, when a girl finds jeans that fit right and you can eat in, a girl has to wear them as often as she can!

As I was saying, the summer months are basically here and with the warmer season, I wanted to share the basics that will be continuously worn and will be the foundation for the rest of my wardrobe. That being said, these items aren’t super exciting, but they are going to be the most worn pieces and they will definitely be apart of future summer seasons.

It’s exciting to go out and buy those trending pieces, and I wouldn’t be lying if I tend to get distracted by new trends, but you and I know that in order to build a long standing wardrobe, you need basics and pieces that can be versatile and build multiple looks.

After going through my recent purchases and what I currently owned in my wardrobe, there are three main pieces that everyone needs.

Piece #1: Denim Shorts

This is going to seem like a no brainer, but denim shorts are imperative to your summer wardrobe. Now, last year I went the whole summer without wearing denim shorts because at the time I couldn’t find the right fit. Being taller, majority of shorts tend to fit too tight and are extremely short. It’s not flattering and I was fed up of constantly only seeing those options in store.

I was so excited to find a “boyfriend” fit that didn’t look like I was wearing a diaper. If I had to choose one style of shorts, these would be the type of denim shorts that everyone needs in their wardrobe. Like your favourite boyfriend jeans, they fit comfortably around the leg, yet they’re still flattering around your waist. Since they aren’t a tight fit, you won’t have to worry about them riding up or losing shape if you wear them more than once a week.

Obviously they are your perfect denim shorts for an everyday street style look, but with the right pieces and accessories, they can easily be transformed to fit anyone's personal style.

Piece #2: Basic Tee (with a twist)

Again, you’re probably thinking, wow Shauna a t-shirt for summer… groundbreaking. But, I kid you not, that if you have a variety of t-shirts that have interesting elements to them, you will always have something to wear.

I never thought I would be your everyday t-shirt girl, because for a long time I wouldn’t simply pair a look with a t-shirt. It would have to be something specific or a trendy piece that I was obsessed with at the time. What this resulted in was many occasions where I would be trying to put together an outfit and I would have “nothing” that would work for a day out with friends or a family bbq. Pretty much any occasions where I didn’t need a silk camisole or a blouse, and I had nothing. With age, I’ve grown to love casual everyday items, and finding t-shirts with something interesting about them fits perfectly into my current style.

What do I mean by interesting elements? This could be a detailed sleeve, mesh inserts, or even a graphic print or letters on the front of it. As basic as this may seem, these are staple pieces that add the “cool girl” vibe to any outfit. They’re so simple yet still interesting, that you’ll appear to have an effortless style.

After a few graphic tees, I’ve reached a new level of minimalism and now I need to find my perfect white tee. You just can’t beat those basics!

Piece #3: The Blazer

Are any of you surprised that I included a blazer in this post, I think it’s almost self explanatory why I would include this even in my summer wardrobe. It’s no secret, I love a good blazer, and even with warmer weather I still want to wear them.

They just have the ability to to complete any outfit. So far I’ve shown you denim shorts and a tshirt, together that seems like a pretty boring outfit, but throw a blazer over it and it seems casual chic. The juxtaposition of something so casual like denim with something worn in business wear like a blazer just seems to work.

Ofcourse, I wouldn’t suggest a blazer on those humid days, but when there’s a beautiful breeze, this is the perfect layering piece. If you’re looking for a lightweight option, linen blazers will be the right option for you. Also think outside the box and shop for blazers with a colour or print to add more interest to your outfit. The options really are limitless with blazers!

Final Thoughts

With these three basics, you have the foundation for the rest of a summer wardrobe. No matter how many trendier pieces you buy for the season, you’ll always have the right basics to either complete your OOTD or help you on the days you’re feeling less inspired.

Denim Shorts, T-Shirt, and Blazer is the outfit that I will never think twice about and with the change of accessories, you could wear this look during the day or for a night out.

Some days you really don’t want to think about what you’re wearing, you just want to be able to wake up, go to your closet, and just know it’ll work. My summer uniform is a fool proof option that I hope you’ll give a try for this season.
