We’ve seen it everywhere, this trend in the beauty community known as the “no makeup” makeup look.
If you haven’t heard of it, the basic premise of the look is to achieve a whole makeup routine that would give you the end result that is so natural, it almost appears like you’re not wearing any makeup. Like many of you, I laughed at the thought of spending time doing your makeup to only make it look like you’re not wearing anything. Seems like a waste of time and product. Makeup in my mind is supposed to be seen, meaning it’s whole purpose is to be used…so why would you go to the trouble to make it look like you weren’t wearing anything.

When you see photos of beauty gurus wearing this look, chances are they have a full face of makeup. I’m talking everything from foundation to a lipstick that perfectly matches your lip colour… even the glow intensifying setting spray. Some have even gone to the extent to add faux freckles. I think it’s pretty clear that I’ve been judgmental towards this beaut trend, but I’m calling myself out and letting you all know that my opinion had slightly changed. Amongst the brands and makeup experts who have shared their favourite products to achieve this, there’s been a shift in how women and young girls present themselves. No longer is it about the heavy eye makeup, we are finally owning our natural appearance.

Growing up, I went through high school wanting to experiment with makeup. Soon enough by grade 10, I was wearing what I didn’t know was the famous eyeliner trend; the cat eye. Give me a cat eye, some bronzer, and a dark lipstick, and you have my makeup routine for a few years. I think it’s fair to say you all know how much I love experimenting and playing with makeup, but underneath all of that was a girl with insecurities and looking for ways to mask it.

Even when I started doing more “natural” looks a.k.a a neutral smokey eye with the rest of my routine remaining the same, realistically I was still trying to cover up anything I wasn’t okay with. Honestly, I think I fell into the path of the “no makeup” makeup simply out of laziness. I would have minimal time to get ready and if I’m going to be really honest, I hated how my skin would react after wearing a heavy face of makeup for a day. Soon enough my makeup routine would lose a step along the way, at first it was the liner, then it was the shadows, and with time I’ve found myself applying at most 5 products.

Something I used to roll my eyes at has become a whole lifestyle and perspective change when it comes to beauty. I never hated my appearance, but I always would find little things I would try to hide. The process of wearing less and less makeup as also been the path to self acceptance which I needed to finally feel liberated. At one point I never thought I could leave the house without getting ready, and now there are more occasions where I leave my home makeup free.

The How To’s of “No Makeup”

Start With Your Base

So how do we go about this beauty trend? Well, I try to keep it as simple as possible. I’m sure you don’t want a 10 step process if you’re looking up “how to do the No Makeup trend”. Personally, it all starts with your skin. I’ve been adamant about keeping my skin looking clear and fresh on its own, thanks to a few of my favourite skincare products. After spending a few months focused on clearing up any of my skin issues, I really want to stay away from heavy makeup.

It’s pretty simple, I’ll spray my face with a facial mist which helps maintain its moisture throughout the day (as well as work as my primer). Then, I go straight into concealer to cover my dark circles and balance out the rest of my face. With a beauty blender I blend it all and that’s the start of my base. After that, I take my favourite cream blush and use it to create definition and bring more colour to my face.

Frame Your Face With Specific Features

Next, I move onto the features that are going to frame my face and that I personally like to bring attention to; eyes and brows. For my eyes, the goal is to just appear more awake, so mascara is the only product I need. For the brows, it’s all about creating definition and appearing fuller.

Glow Baby Glow

Last but not least, you want your skin to glow. I personally love any highlights that are in the gold/champagne family since they just make you look sun kissed. It’s also the most natural of all highlight shades. To complete it all, you can’t just leave your lips bare, so I go for a minimal product that still accentuates the shape of them; a tinted gloss.

And you’re ready to take on your day.

“It’s More than Just a Trend….”

Finally I can leave my house and my skin still feel likes my natural skin. No matter how sheer the foundation is, the moment you work with any powder products, your skin is going to feel heavier. What I love the most is not having to worry if my makeup fades or needs to be retouched throughout the day. I won’t even think to bring a powder or lipstick “just incase”, because everything I’m wearing has basically blended into my skin.

I really like the idea of women and young girls seeing that less is more and the world really means it this time. I don’t feel like I’m bare faced if I go out with this makeup look, because through the whole process I’ve gained confidence in myself and my natural appearance. A trend that I judged when I first heard of it has become a movement that I’m here for. In a world where girls and women constantly feel the need to look perfect all day everyday, it’s refreshing to see that natural beauty is what’s in.

I think it’s okay to accept how you look, but it’s a whole other story to actually like the way you look and love who you are inside and out. Forcing myself to try less and use less product has allowed me to find the beauty in all of my features. The parts of myself I wasn’t proud of or wished appeared more like someone who I thought was beautiful isn’t an issue anymore.

To all of my natural beauties, you have been doing it right for so long, and to my beauties who love the heavy full face I want you to experiment with minimalism. There’s an art to simplicity and the “no makeup” makeup look is simplicity at its best. Now I really do try to keep it a minimum with products, but what’s great about this is that every single person will do it differently. You all have features you love more than others, so it might not be exactly like me, but it’s going to be your own unique beautiful look.

Final Thoughts

I can probably guess that most of you have the products I mentioned above in the How To, so use what you have and try this look. But before you do, I want you to stare at yourself in the mirror and really look at yourself. Notice the colour of your eyes and how they brighten when you smile. Find how your skin glows naturally and mimic that when applying your makeup. Find aspects of your beauty that you love and appreciate without makeup.

The more you find things about yourself that you love and feel confident about, you won’t want to cover it or change it with makeup.

Have you tried this beauty look, and what’s your approach when it comes to makeup? Leave me a comment below, because I would love to know your opinion!

  1. Thank you for sharing! I love the "no makeup" look. As a pregnant mama of 2 (soon to be 3), this has been my go-to look this year. I love your highlight but have never tried the Fenty Beauty line. I will def have to look into that. Thanks.
