For all of you lovelies getting ready for Valentine’s day, I figured some new makeup inspiration was in order.

Whenever I’m getting ready for a night out, there’s this added pressure when doing my makeup that it turns out flawless. At the same time, I want to try different looks and step out of the everyday makeup box, especially for those special occasions. In order to achieve both, there’s a collection of products which always give me my best face. I can count on these products to always work, and I’ve used many of them for a couple of years now. It’s easy to say that these are my go-to. What’s great for our wallets is that majority of these products are from the drugstore and are so affordable! I think the drugstore has some great alternatives to high end makeup that still deliver amazing results. However, there are definitely a few items that hands down I will continue to purchase from high end brands. Items like eyeshadow palettes or setting sprays need to be of a certain quality which I have only found from higher end brands like Urban Decay or Too Faced.

For Valentine’s Day I’m going all in with my makeup to create this fierce and sultry look. Between the smoked out eyeshadow with the tiniest cat eye along with the boldest red lip, it will most definitely be a hit for date night.

My “Go-to” Products

Like I said, majority of these products are from the drugstore, and majority have been apart of my collection for the last few months. All of the products I’ve listed below are ones that I continually reach for. The newest product to be included is L’Oreal’s recent mascara release. The Voluminous x Fibre is the newest mascara for L’Oreal to release that has a two step process. The first step is a wand that promises to act as a primer as it separate your lashes and add instant volume. The second step is a thicker wand that is curved upwards. This is to increase the volume and curl of your lashes, while also adding dramatic length by adding fibres to your lashes. If you want to see a complete review of this mascara, head over to my Instagram page (click here), where I recently did a review over my instagram stories.

How To Get The Look

When deciding what I wanted to do with my makeup, I knew that I would definitely choose red lipstick. It’s almost mandatory to wear a classic red lip for Valentine’s day, I mean red is the colour of passion and love, and well I just love how I feel when I wear red lipstick. It’s like the high heel of makeup. You automatically feel empowered yet feminine and above all like you have the confidence level of Beyonce (cue wind machine). Normally, I wouldn’t wear too much eye makeup if I knew I was going to wear a bold lip, but it’s Valentine’s Day. Why not play up all of your amazing features like eyes and lips?

The key to maintaining balance is using tones that compliment the red lip as well as not using bold colours that will clash and appear less like Beyonce and more like a clown. I went with my favourite palette to create my eye look. The Too Faced Chocolate Bar Palette is a classic go to palette and I suggest everyone (even beginners) to go out and purchase this. I began this look by using a light brown with warm undertones into my upper crease and blended it so my entire crease was covered (using excess powder to bring the colour just under my eyebrow). From there I used a shade darker to deepen the crease. Then to begin the smokey effect, I applied a reddish-brown shade all over the lid. This will pair well with the red lip as it is still a neutral colour and the red undertones will blend nicely all together. Then I used the Burgundy shade of the palette and applied it all over the reddish brown in order to deepen the colour and play up the reddish undertone. I then blended it all together by using that same blending colour I first used. Then, I used a small amount of gel liner to line my lash line and give a slight flick at the outer corner. The look felt too monotone, so I then used the darkest brown shade in the palette and applied a small amount to the outer corner to create depth and shape. To highlight the inner corner of my eye, I used the gold foiled shade. I then used the transition and reddish brown shades to smoke out my lower lash line.

After my eyes were done, I moved onto my face makeup. I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m currently not using a traditional foundation for my whole face. Instead, I’m using a concealer in small amounts all over my face and then blending it in with a stippling brush. At the moment all of three foundations I own (both high end and drugstore) are not cooperating with my skin. While I shop around for a new foundation, I’ve been using the Maybelline Master ProConceal since it has a great amount of coverage without feeling heavy on my face. My skin has been extremely sensitive lately, so any “heavier” consistencies will cause small breakouts and imbalances. I then apply a lighter shade of concealer, this time using the Maybelline Better Skin, under my eyes, on the bridge of my nose, and to cover up any blemishes that need some extra attention. I use a powder to set my face before going in to warm up and create dimension with a contour shade and shimmery bronzer. I compliment the contour and bronzer with a nude pink shade of blush that won’t try to compete with the bronzer, but will still add some colour to the apples of my cheeks. As a highlight, I use the same gold shade from the Too Faced palette to keep it cohesive all over the face. The finishing touches of my look include filling and defining my brows, applying a super voluminous mascara to amp up that eye makeup, and of course the red lipstick. I especially love using this red lipstick from NARS, the velvet matte lip pencil. This lipstick applies onto the lips like butter and is the perfect deep bold red shade that screams Valentine’s Day. With a quick mist of Urban Decay’s setting spray, I’m ready to head out the door.

The finished look for me is dramatic, but not too intimidating for even a beginner to try. It’s sultry without using any dark makeup like black shadows which could so easily end up looking like a racoon. I styled this makeup look with messy waves and a sweater dress, but it could easily be dressed up with sleek hair, a killer dress, and a pair of heels. That’s the best part about this look is that it is so versatile. You could even play around with the look if let’s say you’re more of a lipstick girl, so you might just use the the two lighter transition shades instead of going as dark as I did on your eyes. Or, if you’re not into a bold lip, a creamier nude shade would look incredible with this makeup. What’s important is that you feel your absolute best, especially for date night.

  1. Love love love your lip colour! I need to get it, I've not tried a lip pencil before. It looks much lighter/pink toned on your lips than it does on Nars website. It's a beaut :)

    1. There are a few red shades so it's fading the perfect side for you! This one is a cherry red so it'll be lighter than other deeper shades. I really like this shade, but I would definitely still line the lips before using this product.
