Styling A Fall Favourite: Sweater Dresses

Any fashion girl would say that dressing for fall is the absolute best. It’s the perfect season where you can layer your favourite sweaters and coats, but not too cold where you’re miserable.

Especially here in Canada, the small time between the humidity of summer and the frost of winter is what I consider to be my happy place. There’s just something about the crisp air, falling leaves, and what I consider to be the exclusive season of apple pie. Autumnal dressing is made up of chunky knitwear, leather jackets, and every style of boot. Among the many items on my favourites list for fall, sweater dresses have always been an obsession of mine. Either fitted or chunky, sweater dresses can be the perfect item to dress down or style for a night out. Being new to the blogging scene, I was beyond excited to receive an email about a collaboration. Being recognized not only as a blogger, but for your work and styling, is something I can’t really seem to put into words. To put it simply, it is just really fulfilling to be given an opportunity like this. SO, this post is not just me gushing about how amazing I feel right now, but it’s to provide you all with ways to style different types of sweater dresses (if you didn’t already realize that from the title). Like I said, sweater dresses are one of my favourite items to wear during the fall season. I wanted to show how you can take two pretty standard sweater dresses and style them in a way that can be either preppy or more boho. For this post, I collaborated with Tobi who so kindly gifted me these items. What I love about Tobi is that the clothes are versatile so everyone can find something they like and the prices range from super affordable to higher quality brands. Everyone can shop at Tobi and find something for pretty much every occasion. Now onto the two looks!

Prepped For Fall

This outfit brings out my inner Blair Waldorf… and I LOVE it. I consider this to be a pretty basic turtleneck dress made from a lightweight material, perfect for layering! When I received this dress, I saw myself styling it to be either more edgy with combat boots and an oversized jacket or preppier. I decided on the preppy styling only because I would then be able to wear this with one of my favourite blazers. This Zara blazer has been in my closet since high school! I purchased it when I decided I was going to emulate all things inspired by Gossip Girl, which worked beautifully with this dress. I also really loved the oversized boyfriend fit of this blazer since it captures the suit trend for the fall season without being too oversized that I would lose my shape.

The colour palette for this outfit is pretty neutral since the dress is a charcoal grey and the blazer is black, so I chose a complimentary colour for the accessories. This is the perfect outfit to wear for a busy day running around, so I figured the perfect footwear would be a loafer. The loafer is a faux patent leather in a plum shade. They’re beyond comfortable and add some prep in my step! Now it wouldn’t be fall without some accessories that keep you warm and cozy. I opted for the super stylish and definitely Blair Waldrof approved beret. Similar to the loafers, I chose a beret in a berry shade. I love anything in berry or deep purple for the fall season since it brings in some colour without being too much. This colour is also perfect for brining life to my complexion as well as complimenting the auburn tones in my hair. Together, this look is perfect for the class room on the Upper East Side or if you’re just feeling preppier than usual.

Autumnal Boho

Now on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, the second dress I received screamed bohemian. First off, the dress feels like you’ve wrapped yourself in a warm blanket. It is a knitted material that also has some stretch to it, so it moves with you and doesn’t feel bulky. It is a true oversized dress with long bell bottom sleeves. This is probably my favourite element of the dress, the sleeves are so unique and what stood out to me as being the perfect boho day dress for fall. I also really love the terracotta colour of this dress as this is not a normal colour I would wear.

I really wanted to find other clothes and accessories that would compliment the boho features of this dress as well as its colour. With the dress, I had to layer my favourite wrap from Aritzia that has this beautiful burgundy and navy print. The wrap is perfect for those cooler days since it is a heavy woollen fabric and the dark tones of the print bring your attention to the dress. Along with this, I decided to belt the dress to highlight my waistline and create a different shape. The belt itself is your average leather belt that is in a similar shade as the dress. Even though I love how chunky and oversized this dress is, adding the belt brought back some shape since I layered a heavy wrap over it as well. The final piece of this outfit are the over the knee boots. I think every girl can agree with me that the perfect combination are sweater dresses and over the knee boots. These boots are actually flats (since I don’t always need the extra height), but I loved the combination of chunky knits and these leather boots. Together this outfit screams autumn in the colour palette, layers, and mixed textures. It’s perfect for any fall day especially as the weather gets cooler!
