My Affordable Guide to Skincare

I feel like skincare has been having its own moment lately in the beauty world. With the popularity of having glowy skin, almost every brand was releasing their own set of magical products which could help us achieve this.

I have to be honest, I was never really into skincare. Growing up, I was extremely lucky with my skin in the sense that I didn’t experience a huge amount of acne or redness. As I got older, I started to notice a change in the texture of my skin. Dry patches that would lead to sensitivity and irritation. Being someone who enjoys wearing makeup as well as a competitive dancer, having sensitive combination skin made it difficult to apply my makeup without experiencing some irritation. I decided that I wanted to help my skin especially during the change in seasons. The transition to cooler months can seriously affect how my skin reacts. Having combination skin, I have patches that will be dry, but my skin still has the ability to become too greasy and experience some small breakouts. Unsure of what products to look for and try, I found myself watching beauty gurus on youtube and reading product reviews online and overall my consensus is that skincare is crazy expensive. Spending hundreds of dollars on products just seemed too outrageous for me. There is this attached idea that skincare is a luxury and honestly I just wanted a set of products that are practical and will help my skin. Now let’s be extra honest, choosing a set of cleansers, toners, and serums won’t solve all of your skin woes. There are plenty of other factors that also need to be taken into consideration such as diet, water intake, and of course those ever so lovely hormones. This and more can affect your skin even if you’re using the most expensive moisturizer. Over the past few months, I have collected some of my favourite skincare products that are affordable, but have still helped keep my skin under control!

Step 1: Cleansing pt 1

Cleaning your skin, in my case, is a two step process. Especially on the days where I am wearing makeup, you need a product that is going to breakdown and remove makeup without irritating my skin. As of last year, micellar water became a trending product for skincare. The concept behind it is that with an easy swipe it will remove your makeup. Now I have to admit that there have been some hits and some misses when it comes to micellar water. The first few releases I found left my skin greasy, and when travelling home from a competition, I want a product that will remove my makeup without leaving a residue. Cue my top picks that I constantly use. Both of these waters are specifically for sensitive skin, but both work beautifully! L’Oreal and Bioderma are two of my favourite micellar waters. There's no chemical smell when using it, no irritation or burning sensation, and above all it doesn’t leave my skin too dry or too grease from a residue. I leave my L’Oreal bottle at home to use on a daily basis or when I just need to freshen my face up. The smaller bottle is perfect to take with me to travel. Using this to take off that heavy layer of makeup (even annoying liquid lipsticks and mascaras), preps my skin for a deeper cleanse.

Step 2: Cleansing pt 2

Once my makeup has been removed, I move onto my second step in cleansing. Finding the right cleanser has been difficult. I wanted something that would clean my skin, but also remove any dead skin that could lead to clogged pores. I may not breakout often, but I do have some textured spots because of oversized pores, so that was the main focus for buying a product. I stuck with a brand that many trust with skincare; Neutrogena. In the past, I have used many cleansers that never really seemed to clean my skin, but irritated it and dried my skin out. In the end my skin would be irritated and would breakout from that irritation. SO I have been using this cleanser that also works as an exfoliator so my skin feels soft and refreshed after every use.

Step 3: Facial Water

Something new that I started using in my skincare routine was a facial water. Even though I have combination skin, boosting the hydration is important to keep my skin feeling balanced. After exfoliating my skin, it is begging for some hydration! The purpose of this product is to prep your skin to absorb as much moisture and hydration from this and the next two steps that will follow it. Once you dry your skin after cleansing it, I use a small amount of this product and lightly pat it all over my face, letting it sit on the skin. I love using this after my cleanser as it cools my skin. For the longest time I was only cleansing my skin and then using a moisturizer right away. Even though I was taking care of my skin regularly, I wasn’t getting the results needed which meant my skin was still feeling dehydrated. This facial water has been the perfect in between step before the last two products in my routine.

Step 4: Serum

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like serum has become the it word when discussing skincare. Obviously, I had to try a serum and see what this is all about. I decided on the same brand as my facial water since I wanted to boost the absorption of hydration as much as possible. Once the facial water has dried, I apply a small amount of serum and place it to the main parts of my face (cheeks, forehead, chin) before massaging it all over. Since this serum is focused on hydration, it reinforces what the facial water started. However, what I really enjoy about this product is how it doesn't leave my skin feeling oily. These two extra steps in this process have given my skin a deep hydration that it really needs especially in the colder months.

Step 5: Moisturizer

A final step that is always important is to moisturize. After all the previous steps, it’s important to give your skin some added moisture. Between the harsh weather conditions (whether it’s dry humid heat or brisk cool wind) or simply after using all of these products, it’s important to protect your skin. My choice for moisturizer is Aveeno’s ultra calming moisturizer. Aveeno is a brand that is perfect for all types of skin, but especially for sensitive skin. It’s important to find a moisturizer that’s right for you as not everyone needs deep hydration or some might need a heavier or thicker moisturizer. Why I chose this specific moisturizer is because it is ultra calming, it calms my skin after using my skincare routine and is the perfect layer before using any makeup.

And that’s my current skincare routine. I hope this has been helpful, either because you don’t already have a routine or are looking for new products to try. Again, I wanted to use products that everyone could buy. I always believe that you don’t have to spend a fortune to feel luxurious. Happy Skincare!
