Dressing Up Your Black Jeans

Whenever I shop, I always try to find items that can be used multiple ways in my wardrobe. I try to stay away from clothing that can only be worn one way or for certain occasions since I don’t have the closet space to manage that. It's important to have a collection of clothes that can be recycled season after season. I want a wardrobe that is versatile and offers me options for any mood I may be in.
Some days I’m feeling more feminine and girly and then there are most days where I am a huge fan of the “athleisure” trend. Once again I have collaborated with Tobi to show you how to dress up a simple pair of black jeans. I am wearing the Glendale Mid Rise Girlfriend Jeans for this outfit, which are looser fitting black jeans with rips at the knees as well as a rough hemline at the ankles. On any day I would throw these on with a pair of sneakers, basic tee, and a bomber or leather jacket. However, to give myself more of a challenge, I wanted to style these in a way that were dressier or more “work appropriate”. As I’m writing this, I’m getting a flashback to free dress day in high school where we were given detentions or sent home if we showed up to school with ripped jeans because they were inappropriate or unacceptable… I mean can’t we all just agree that it's only knees we’re seeing?! The Horror! I accepted the challenge, making ripped jeans so appropriate that even your grandparents wouldn’t make passive aggressive comments about wasting money on jeans with holes in them. As always, I’m so grateful for Tobi gifting these jeans to me. It’s exciting to work with a brand and help create content for my blog to share with all of you! Now onto the look.

I think it’s fair to say that my style is pretty minimalistic in the sense that I don’t wear many accessories and the clothing I choose to wear are in solid colours or wearable prints. Even when dressing up for an occasion, I really try to stay minimal with my styling. I typically don’t like wearing much jewelry unless it is an item which has a special meaning. I almost feel bulky and uncomfortable if I have too many components in an outfit. In the case of this outfit, I had a specific image in mind when putting it together. I love layering in the cooler months and I wanted to have a piece that would be the focal point to tie the outfit together. For me, this piece is the BCBG long waistcoat which, to me, functions as a combination of the formal aspects of a blazer and the waist tie that is normally found in a trench coat. Both of these are considered classic business attire, therefore the waistcoat embodies the same qualities. What makes this perfect for fall is that it is made of a woollen material.

The next component of this outfit is your basic turtleneck. I purchased this turtleneck in two colours a few seasons ago and I definitely don't regret it. This is a piece of clothing that everyone needs in their wardrobe for the cooler months, simply because it will never go out of style. It’s the perfect item for layering under multiple things, while also adding another classic element to your overall look. I especially love the colour of this turtleneck, since the cream is more complimentary to my skin tone than wearing a harsh white turtleneck. Together, the waistcoat and turtleneck are the perfect classic pairing to dress up these jeans. Both of these items could also be paired with multiple other options such as lighter jeans, leather leggings/trousers, or skirts. Items like these are exactly what I love about my wardrobe.

The black jeans, in this case, are replacing a pair of trousers that would normally be worn with these other elements. A pair of black jeans with ripped knees and unfinished hemline adds an edge to this look as well as interest since this is not your usual pairing. The juxtaposition of classic elements with something edgier makes this outfit more modern. When I was wearing this, I didn't feel overdressed because of the jeans. It just felt like a really cool outfit with some edge to it. There's comfort in wearing jeans, but since they're black, they can easily be dressed up.

The shoes are definitely the most interesting element of this outfit. I have to say, if you're looking for affordable footwear with interesting elements, Public Desire is my go to. These boots are a black velvet with gold plating just at the front of the toes. These boots do have a small heel which is great for those days when I want the extra height without worrying about having sore feet at the end of the day. Especially when the rest of my outfit is minimalistic, I like to add some interest in my accessories like these boots. Again, it's taking something classic - a pair of black boots, but choosing them in a velvet material with gold detailing adds a modern twist.
