Clothing I Never Expected to Like

I like to think that I am more open minded when it comes to my personal style. Experimenting with colour, print, and trends is what has allowed me to figure out what I really like and what I don’t like. Learning from my past fashion "mistakes" has taught me to try things outside of the box. From every mistake, I have learnt and grown through all of the phases in my style which has helped me develop my current wardrobe. We all have a comfort zone when it comes to clothing, but the last thing I want is to be stuck in a style rut. That being said, I do have my opinions and judgements of certain looks and trends. I can definitely say that I have a list of items that I would never be caught dead in.

I know it seems contradictory. Here I am telling you that I am learning as I grow from trying to step out of my comfort zone, while I also have things that I will protest and never try. Honestly, as much as I try to be open minded, I have walked into a store and turned right around if the overall aesthetic did not appeal to me. There could have been items hidden amongst the racks that had potential, but I did not give the store a chance. When it came time to shop for my summer wardrobe I did not want to give up on a store unless I felt like I have looked through all of its sections. I reminded myself to be openminded and try different things even if there was a general look and vibe I was inspired by. As you all know Pinterest and Instagram are great tools that I use in order to create my wish list for future shopping trips. After seeing bloggers and magazine spreads incorporating this item, I thought to myself if maybe I was wrong about white denim.

Oh white denim, the image of tight ripped jeans that somehow end up being see through is what always comes to mind. White denim, in my opinion, has always ended up looking cheap and tacky. If I am going to be completely honest, every time I saw someone wearing a pair of white super skinny jeans I would question their style choice in my head. I know this sounds horrible, but haven’t you ever hated a piece of clothing so much that you judged anyone who ever wore it?

So here I was searching online for the perfect white denim pieces and having an internal argument over whether I could really wear this. Will I look tacky? What if the item is see through? How do I go about my day without getting them dirty? The deciding factor would be going to the actual stores and forcing myself to just try it….and that is when life as I knew it changed. I put this white denim skirt on and instantly fell in love. The white was flattering to my barely tanned legs, and elevated a simple outfit. This white denim skirt became the fun sister to what now seemed like my dull regular denim skirt. It brought its own personality to my other piece for the summer months that a regular denim skirt just did not seem to have. I will say that the cut and fit does play a factor in why I love this so much, but I instantly went from hating white denim to becoming its number one fan.

I came home from that shopping trip and took the plunge buying my second item in white denim. I was lucky because it was Zara’s massive mid season sale. It was on their website that I found a pair of white jeans with a ruffle detail that were too cute to pass up on. By now all of those fears that would have previously caused an internal arguments were gone and I just wanted my jeans to arrive in the mail. The fit of the jeans is similar to a girlfriend jean because they are loose with a low crotch. The fit is comparable to the H&M jeans I obsessed over from my "perfect pair of jeans" post. I love how the jeans fuse a slouchy fit with a feminine ruffle. They're beyond comfortable and look great with any type of shoe.

I styled these jeans how I would wear them if I were going out for dinner or drinks with friends. A loose fitting blouse is perfect for those summer nights, a block heel sandal, and millennial pink clutch with gold detailing. Getting over my bias and judgment allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone and style my wardrobe in ways that I have not done before. I only had to try on one item of clothing to realize that my preconceived notions of white denim are not always true. What is important is finding pieces in a similar cut and fit to what you already own. This will ease the process of trying something out of the ordinary. I still hate white denim when it is worn a certain way, but I have definitely found my perfect match to suit my style.

  3. I like your style (clothing and writing). I personally like white denim, but I can relate to your article. A store's appeal and first impression is definitely important.

  5. I think I am on the same page with you with the preconceived notion of not liking white denim. And for me, I don't even think that I don't like it, I think it's more that I don't like it for my body. I have a weird thing about white, but I do love the two pieces that you picked out! I think that they are very flattering and versatile! You may have inspired me to try out some more white!

    1. Exactly haha! I felt very cautious walking around. It is going to take some getting used to it for me to feel like I can move freely without worrying about dirtying the clothes.
