The Best Tips I've Learnt On My Fitness Journey

For the past few years, fitness and over all wellness has been significant in my life. As a competitive dancer it is necessary to train to maintain and build strength so I can perform at my absolute best. Now I can honestly say that fitness is a benefit for my overall health, but the journey was a rocky process. When I started college, I found myself feeling self conscious of my appearance as I began to put on weight and change from what I was used to. Late nights studying resulted in poor eating habits and of course drinking large amounts of coffee to get through the tireless days at school. At the same time, the pressure to look a certain way was affecting my reasoning to workout. This resulted in a cycle of me starting a new fitness program, having motivation for only one week, and by the end I would be back to where I started feeling defeated.

At the age of 20 I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism (under active thyroid). Realizing the consequences if I continued these bad habits opened my eyes to reality. I knew then that I was ready to make a change. Learning and gaining knowledge regarding nutrition and fitness changed my perspective. Fitness was no longer about looking a certain way or for the attention of others, but to give my body what it needs to flourish. My passion for living at my absolute best has spread to all aspects of life. Food and exercise are no longer topics I ignore or feel anxious about because I do it for myself.

Now that I’ve blabbed about my journey, I wanted to offer some of my best tips when it comes to either starting a new fitness regimen or just wanting to improve your health.

Educate Yourself
Buy some books, download apps, read various articles online, etc. The information is endless! Learn the different muscle groups and gain a basic knowledge so when you enter a gym or train at home you won’t feel as lost.

Don’t Fall for the Multiple “Fitness Guides” You See Online.
I’ve noticed regular people trying to promote their programs and sell you their knowledge when they don’t have the credentials to back it up. It is amazing to see more people get involved in their health, but in reality you need to find a trainer who truly understands how to train you. I recently purchased a new book that is specific to Irish dancers and their training and nutrition. I’ve discussed fitness with various trainers and physical therapists before, but without the background knowledge of Irish dance my training was lacking. After reading Reaching New Heights, I now have more tools that I can use to train my body and nourish it in a way that will benefit my sport. It is so important to build a fitness and nutrition plan that is right for you!

Don't Workout for Hours The reality of those long sessions are continuous breaks or pauses because you will either get bored or too tired to complete exercises with good form. The other reality is over training your body to the point of injury (which will only hinder your results). Currently, I divide my training sessions throughout the week. This allows me to give full energy and focus on that targeted area. By the end of the week I would have completed multiple workouts that range from 20 minutes - 1 hour.

Learn to Love the Process and Your Body Throughout It
This is a tough one… my original thought process with fitness was "if I train, I will look better". I was so focused on my appearance that I couldn’t learn to love the process of progress (and the ups and downs that come with it). Learn to love your body now and recognize it getting stronger. Recognize how you don’t feel as sluggish throughout the day or that you can sleep better through the night. Those are the right reasons to train. Once you change your mind frame you won’t care about the end result because the progress will be the greatest victory.

Don’t Give Up! The process of starting a new fitness regimen is not easy. There will be times where giving up and sitting at home eating chips will seem like the better option. Those are the moments when you need to push forward and continue! One of my favourite fitness related quotes is “what seems impossible today will one day be your warm up”. The process does work, but you have to believe you can do it and have the determination to keep going. It is also extremely important to know that being fit or losing weight should not be your only focus. Finding balance while not giving up on your health can be tricky at times, but we all need to balance our goals with life and sometimes enjoying a night out instead of going to the gym is needed to keep your goals in check.

  2. These are all such important things! And one big thing that I have learned it the importance of self love and acceptance, I suffer from different auto immune diseases which can hinder my fitness progress and I have learned to just love my body at every stage. That mental change is something that has been so amazing during my journey.

    1. I was the same way for the longest time. It's definitely not easy and the best way to overcome it is by figuring out what about fitness bothers you or leads you to stop.
