My Essentials for Spring Beauty

beauty, fashion, street style, montreal

If you haven’t already noticed, I’m very excited about the warmer spring weather that has finally reached Montreal. After discussing trends, inspirations, and newer purchases the next obvious post would have to do with my current beauty routine. As many of you know, my former blog was dedicated to beauty trends and looks so I more than dabble with makeup. Lately I’ve started to move away from heavy and dramatic looks and focus more on natural makeup. This spring, my makeup inspiration is fresh and feminine and these are the essentials to obtain such a look.

Clear Skin
Having a perfect base for your makeup is extremely important no matter the look you are trying to achieve. For me, a foundation that has a full coverage allows me to create the “perfect” base for the rest of my makeup. Finding a foundation with great coverage that won’t appear heavy is not the easiest process, but I found a foundation which works for me. With only a small amount of product, my current foundation covers my face and neck beautifully. The blemishes on my skin disappear without drying out my skin. With just a little brush of setting powder, my face is ready for the next steps for this spring routine. This Urban Decay foundation was one of my first high end foundation purchases, and I don’t regret spending the extra money. Even on the hottest summer day, my foundation will hold up without building up. My standards have not only been met but exceeded with this foundation.

Bye Bye Contour
The obsession with contour and "carving" out your features is still popular as ever. With multiple companies creating palettes, people are definitely still crazy about contour. Recently I find contouring ages my features and isn’t always flattering so I started to look to other products to create a softer definition. I first use a bronzer on my cheek bones, forehead, and the bridge of my nose to deflect light. Then with a blush, I bring some colour to the apples of my cheeks blending up my cheekbone. This combination highlights where I want to place focus on whilst creating some definition. The goal with this combination is to appear “naturally” sunkissed as opposed to heavy stage makeup. My current favorite products are the Tarte Amazonian Clay Blush and NYC bronzer.

Glow Obsessed

One of the biggest trends since last year has been striving for that dewy glowing skin. I am a huge fan of all highlighters and for a while I would only wear heavy powdered ones which were mostly made of glitter. That over the top “glow” wasn’t translating well with my everyday makeup routine so I wanted to find a product that would bring more light to my face without looking like a face full of glitter. My current highlighter is a creamy formula and I cannot get enough of it and it is the Benefit Watt’s Up Cream to Powder Highlighter. I wear it on the top of my cheekbone, eyebrow bone, tip of my nose, and the inner part of my eyes. I love a highlight shade that are apart of the champagne colour family as the glow blends beautifully with my current bronzer and blush combination. Stepping away from heavy contour and  towards subtle highlight creates a natural makeup look which draws attention to my own features as opposed to hiding or defining others.

Hello Lips

I never thought I would be the person with multiple lipsticks, but lip color has become a staple for all makeup looks. Currently I love wearing pink or nude lipsticks as they compliment by skin tone and soften my overall look. My current favorites are the L’Oreal Color Riche Exclusive Collection in Jennifer’s Nude, MAC Mineralize Rich Lipstick in Pure Pout, Bite Beauty’s Amuse Bouche in Honeycomb, and Marc Jacobs Le Marc Lip Creme in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Nude lipsticks have been on trend for the past few years, but I’m moving away from the matte liquid lipsticks and instead wearing more of a glossy finish. The formula itself is less drying for my lips, and I find that creamier lipsticks make my lips appear fuller. I must admit there is one liquid lipstick that I cannot get enough of and that’s the Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lip Color in Devotion. The shade is a dusty rose that is super feminine and brightens the rest of my features.

  1. Summertime is my favorite time of the year because you have that natural glow. Add a little bronzer and you're set for summer!

  2. I loved reading your recommendations, Shauna, and your photos are all so lovely in the natural outdoor lighting! I agree with you about the overly-contoured trend... it seems to work better on instagram than in real life. One makeup artist I recently discovered is Katie Jane Hughes-- have you heard of her? She has a very minimal style that emphasizes lots of glow.
